Tips for a long-lasting Christmas tree
- Keep your Christmas tree watered. It will “drink” up to a quart of water per day.
- For optimum uptake, especially if the tree is out of water for some time, cut about an inch off the stump.
- If you’re not decorating the tree right away, store it in a water-filled tree stand in the garage or outdoors in a shady area.
- Indoors, place your tree out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources (or close heat vents).
- Check the tree stand daily. Do not let the water level drop below the cut end.
- Recycle — don’t burn — your tree
For safety, do not attempt to burn a Christmas tree for firewood (it’s a fire hazard). Instead, recycle your tree by returning it to the natural environment for landscaping trails, fish habitat, and other eco-friendly uses. Scout troops and other organizations offer a pick-up service; see Metro for more recycling options.
